Rwanda-backed M23 rebels enter east Congo town of Uvira, sources say

During the recent rebel attacks in Uvira, more than 845 people tragically lost their lives, leaving families and entire communities devastated. In the midst of this crisis, and despite a severe lack of financial resources, CEJDU Asbl responded with compassion and courage to support the most vulnerable. Every morning, the organization provided porridge to 124 children, ensuring they had at least one nourishing meal to begin their day. In addition, CEJDU Asbl offered shelter and care to four children whose parents were killed during the attacks, giving them safety, dignity, and hope in a time of profound loss.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all CEJDU Asbl staff members for their sacrifice, commitment, and bravery. Working as humanitarians in such dangerous conditions requires extraordinary faith and dedication. Their willingness to serve, even when their own lives are at risk, reflects the true spirit of humanity.

One woman shared with CEJDU staff, “The world has forgotten us, but we will remain faithful, like Job in the Bible.” Her words echo the resilience and faith of the people of Uvira amid ongoing suffering. Despite violence and hardship, the community continues to stand firm, trusting that compassion, solidarity, and faith will one day bring peace and restoration to our country.
