UPDATE OF THE REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE TO HELP WITH THE FIZI DISASTER RELIEF IN THE DRC

Location: Ngandja Sector

Period: May 2025

Request Number: CEJDUasbl-SK-2025020

1. CONTEXT AND JUSTIFICATION OF THE REQUEST

During the night of May 8-9, 2025, at around 8:45 p.m., torrential rains fell in the Ngandja sector, Fizi territory, causing enormous human and material damage. According to a provisional report from local authorities, there are 109 deaths, more than 30 injured and several people missing following the flooding of the Kasaba rivers, near the village of Yungu, hundreds of houses were destroyed and others swept away by the water currents towards Lake Tanganyika. The environmental and health authorities (BCZ) estimate that approximately 750 people are directly affected in the Yungu health area. According to the village chief, the authorities do not have the capacity to respond to the urgent needs resulting from this disaster. He urgently requested the contribution of every person of goodwill and all partners, each according to their mandate to help the chief respond to this disaster. For the moment, access to food, drinking water, essential household items, shelter, protection and health care are the most urgent needs of the affected populations. No assistance is yet available on site. This disaster comes on top of the floods of Lake Tanganyika, which had already affected around 500 households and also caused significant material damage in coastal areas. Most of the affected people stormed schools in search of shelter. Physical access to neighboring villages, in Uvira city. The rains continue to fall heavily in the village and its surroundings and continue to create enormous damage: destruction of houses, fields, deaths of men, destruction of schools, churches, etc. Thus, the CEJDU asbl team via its face point made an update to understand and analyze the needs of the affected people with an emphasis on the identification of separated children, people living with disabilities and exchanges with the host families of separated children.
