Our history
CENTRE D'ENCADREMENT DES JEUNES POUR LE DEVELOPPEMENT D'UVIRA, (CEJDU Asbl)
Known in English as “Uvira Youth Education Center and Sustainable Development”
Since the conflicts that began in 1996, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has faced persistent instability due to competition over mineral resources such as cobalt, which is vital for electric vehicle batteries. This exploitation has deepened poverty, disrupted communities, and limited educational opportunities for youth. Cultural norms often prioritize boys' education while girls remain disadvantaged, resulting in women having reduced access to schooling and related opportunities. Additionally, marginalized community and individuals living with HIV experience significant marginalization, often encountering rejection, isolation, and insufficient support. Many are compelled to conceal their identities and discontinue their studies due to societal taboos.
As a U.S. citizen of Congolese descent, the founder recognizes both the value of opportunity and the importance of inclusion. During a visit to Uvira in January 2020, prior to the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mr. Papy Seruka—a Congolese advocate, entrepreneur, and community leader—initiated efforts throughout the villages of Uvira Territory. His work was inspired by direct observations of the region’s challenges, including prolonged conflict, displacement, and economic hardship. This commitment led to the establishment of the nonprofit organization Centre d’Encadrement des Jeunes pour le Développement d’Uvira (CEJDU Asbl), dedicated to restoring hope, dignity, education, and opportunity for those most affected and marginalized, providing a safe environment for all.
Together with humanitarian and university graduate Kiromwa Umoja Noe, the founders convened to develop the organization’s vision and complete legal paperwork in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Official registration was granted by the Department of Justice in July 2020.
